Before you can start doing business in Belgium, you need to register yourself or your company with the Crossroads Bank for Enterprises. In many cases you also need to register with the VAT authorities. You should also activate your e-Box Enterprise, in order to receive official documents via a secured email box.

Social security

Almost every child living in Belgium is entitled to child benefit. Child benefit is paid monthly.

Additionally, you are entitled to a maternity allowance for the birth of a child, and an adoption allowance for the adoption of a child. These are one-off allowances.

Do business

Belgian legislation has introduced special measures for some specific activities as part of the fight against social fraud. These include work in immovable property and certain activities in the meat sector and security sector.

Within that framework, the NSSO obliges companies and/or individuals who carry out any of the aforementioned activities, to comply with the following measures:

  • Withholding obligation on invoices
  • Declaration of Works
  • Attendance registration Checkinatwork
  • Attendance registration Check In and Out at Work

Work and retirement

In the fight against social fraud, you are obliged in some sectors to register your presence at work. Your employer has to inform you whether attendance registration is required at your workplace. You and your employer are jointly responsible for the registration.

Attendance registration is currently mandatory in the following sectors:

  • Works on immovable property, delivery of ready-mixed concrete and activities in the meat sector (Checkinatwork)
  • Cleaning activities in immovable property (Check In and Out at Work)
